Julie Mortimer is a Bellingham Washington Native, influenced early on by the many hours spent on the trails and beaches of Whatcom County. Creativity was encouraged and nurtured in her family and drawing together with family or friends was not an unusual activity. Painting cards to share while traveling turned into a desire to do larger work. Upon retirement from a career in nursing, she sought out instruction and opportunities to join others in plein air work, and when the Covid Lockdown occurred, watercolors became a passion and she attempted to recreate an art curriculum of sorts via you tube tutorials!
Currently she is studying under Lorna Libert and Trish Harding, two professional fine art oil painters, well known in her area. They are both clearly influenced by the wild beauty of the country we have such intimate access to.
Julie often starts a painting with a loose abstract landscape and considers this result when determining what kind of foreground or creatures to feature. The intensity of the color and texture of her work often may appear more like oil paintings.
Julie participated in her first Art Walk in Bellingham in March 2023.
Recently completed a two month showing at the Lucky Monkey in Bellingham.
Her work was exhibited at Jansen Gallery's Winter Juried Show - 2022 and 2023.
She has exhibited several pieces at local venues after winning Whatcom Art Guilds "Artists Choice" award.
Her Eagle Rock is one of the 100 finalists in the PleinAir Magazine’s 12th Annual Pleinair Salon.
